GENERAL NEWS AND PRESS RELEASES

FTT now manufactures the OSU Rate of Heat Release Apparatus which is used to expose aircraft interior cabin materials to an incident radiant heat flux of 35 kW/m2, to comply with FAR 25.853 [a-1] requirements. The apparatus, built in accordance with FAA Fire Test Handbook, Chapter 5, is provided in three parts: test chamber, control unit and data acquisition and analysis system.

FTT now manufactures the ASTM E 162 radiant panel flame spread apparatus. This standard has recently been adopted by the Federal Railroad Administration into the rules for fire hazard assessment in buses, trains and passenger rail cars. Complementing this instrument is the software package 162Soft. This software and data logger interface can be retrofitted to any ASTM E 162 apparatus and connects with the eight stack thermocouples and pyrometer.

FTT now manufactures the FM Global Fire Propagation Apparatus, (commonly known as the Tewarson Apparatus) and have working closely with FM Global to develop the apparatus. This is the instrument developed in the 1980's and now used extensively by FM Global for a variety of insurance industry norms including clean room and cable applications. The method has just been standardised by ASTM as ASTM E 2058. FTT supplied the first production model to FMRC in the summer of 1999.

CEN 127 has published the Standards needed to support the Construction Products Directive. Standards for the SBI (Single Burning Item) (EN 13823), Bomb Calorimeter (EN ISO 1716), Flooring Radiant Panel test (EN ISO 9239), Non-combustibility test (EN ISO 1182) and Ignitability test (EN ISO 11925-2) are now available. This has allowed FTT, as a professional instrument manufacturer, to optimise the design and production of all these instruments so that we now offer and service world-wide a new generation of professionally engineered equipment to our clients at low cost. Remember how the Cone Calorimeter moved from being the £50,000 prototype style equipment that the first 20 purchasers bought in the 1980's to the £30,000 professionally supported, low maintenance system offered by FTT as soon as ISO 5660 was published?

We recently extended our range to produce a wide range of simple boxed burner tests. These include the UL94, EN ISO 11925 and FMVSS 302 equipment which we stock and others which we build to order.

FTT has a range of software for their instruments and can also supply software for existing users of instruments supplied other manufacturers. These are

• ConeCalc - for the Cone Calorimeter
• SmokeBox - for the Smoke Density Chamber (with full support for the ISO 5659)
• SBICalc - for the SIngle Burn Item
• IMOSoft - for the IMO / ISO 5658 / LIFT Spread Of Flame
• NonComb - for the ISO 1182 Non-combustibility
• CubeCalc - for the 3 metre cube
• FRPSoft - for the Flooring Radiant Panel
• 162Soft - for the ASTM E 162 Radiant Panel Flame Spread Apparatus
• FPACalc - for the Fire Propagation Apparatus
• OSUCalc - for the Ohio State University Heat Release Apparatus

• CableSoft - for the FIPEC cable test

PRESS RELEASE

FTT acquire fire business of Stanton Redcroft/Rheometric -
April 1998

Fire Testing Technology wishes to inform all its customers and the customers of Rheometric Scientific, Polymer Laboratories, PL Thermal Sciences and Stanton Redcroft that it has purchased the Fire Testing Instrument Business of Rheometric Scientific Ltd. This business incorporates the fire testing instruments traditionally sold under the trade mark of Stanton Redcroft and constitutes several test instruments, including:

• Stanton Redcroft Oxygen Index (FTA)
• Stanton Redcroft High Temperature Oxygen Index (HFTA)
• Stanton Redcroft Smoke Box
• Stanton Redcroft Cone Calorimeter

Prior to this recent acquisition, this range of instruments has been marketed both under the trade name of Stanton Redcroft and under the names of the Companies which owned that trade name, i.e. PL Thermal Sciences, Polymer Laboratories and Rheometric Scientific Ltd.

Fire Testing Technology, which was founded in 1989, now manufactures the largest range of reaction to fire test instruments in the world including its own Oxygen Index, High Temperature Oxygen Index, NBS Smoke Density Chamber and Cone Calorimeter for which it has become the world’s leading supplier. FTT has, for several years, been servicing and maintaining instruments manufactured by other manufacturers, including Rheometric and Stanton Redcroft. Thus servicing and support of Stanton Redcroft instruments will be readily absorbed into the business of FTT.

FTT are offering immediate supply, support, spares and maintenance contracts for fire testing instrumentation formerly marketed under the trade names Stanton Redcroft, PL Thermal Sciences, Polymer Laboratories, and Rheometric. Please register as a FTT, Rheometric, Stanton Redcroft instrument user together with your interest in our instruments or service agreements by e-mailing us or contacting us with your information.

GENERAL INFORMATION

Fire Performance of Electric Cables (FIPEC)

FTT researchers Andrew Green and Stephen Grayson were key contributors to this project sponsored by the EC. The project results are now being used by the EC and the European electric cable making industry as the basis for testing electric cables under the Construction Products Directive.

The FIPEC Report is published as a hardback book. Book details are given on the Interscience Communications web site where you can order your copy of the Report from the Publications Section. http://www.intercomm.dial.pipex.com

The information about the FIPEC project previously displayed here concerning the objectives and details of the project can be viewed HERE.
